Warm white Luminair permanent lights on a bungalow roofline in northwest Calgary at night

Brentwood, Varsity, and Dalhousie are established northwest Calgary communities near the University of Calgary, Crowchild Trail, and Nose Hill Park. Most of the original homes went up in the 1960s and 1970s: bungalows, bi-levels, and split-levels on mature, tree-lined streets, with a growing number of renovations, rebuilds, and infills mixed in. Long, low eaves on a bungalow or split-level are some of the easiest rooflines in the city to light well. Permanent lights go up once, read as trim in daylight, and give you warm white every night and holiday colour when you want it—no ladder on an icy driveway every November.

This page is the neighbourhood guide for these established northwest communities. The quadrant overview is permanent Christmas lights in NW Calgary; further north are Edgemont, the Hamptons and Hidden Valley, and for the house styles common here, see permanent lights on Calgary bungalows and split-levels.

What a permanent system is

A professional permanent system is colour-matched aluminum track fastened along the fascia or soffit, with fully sealed IP68 LED modules sitting inside the channel. A dedicated warm-white channel handles everyday architectural light, and colour channels cover Christmas, Halloween, Diwali, Canada Day, Flames nights, or whatever you schedule in the app. In daylight the track reads as part of the trim. Nothing is clipped to an eavestrough, and nothing comes down in January.

Where we work in Brentwood, Varsity, and Dalhousie

  • Brentwood. Mostly bungalows and split-levels from the community’s early decades, plus renovated homes and newer rebuilds.
  • Varsity. Bungalows, split-levels, and two-storeys on mature lots, some on larger lots or sloping streets, with a mix of original homes and rebuilds.
  • Dalhousie. Bungalows, bi-levels, and split-levels with front driveways or carports, and some townhouse complexes.

Bungalows, split-levels, and rebuilds

Bungalows have long, low front eaves that are easy to reach, so a single continuous line of warm white usually does a lot for curb appeal at a moderate price. Split-levels and bi-levels add a step in the roofline that the track can follow cleanly. Rebuilds and infills tend to have taller fronts, flat or low-slope roofs, and darker trim; we colour-match the track so it disappears in daylight. More on contemporary rooflines in permanent lights on modern Calgary homes, and on shared rooflines in Calgary townhouses, duplexes and infills.

Original fascia, mature trees, and outlets

Original homes here are 50 or more years old, and many have had a reroof or two. We check fascia condition at the quote; soft, cracked, or hail-damaged wood is better repaired or wrapped before the lights go on, and if a reroof or new eavestroughs are planned, it usually makes sense to do that first. Mature spruce, elm, and poplar can crowd parts of an eave, so we plan ladder placement and tell you if a section cannot be reached safely. Homes of this age often have few exterior outlets, and some have carports instead of attached garages, so we work out where the controller can plug in. Exterior outlets should be weatherproof and GFCI-protected; if you need a new one, that is work for a licensed electrician.

Weather on older rooflines

Northwest Calgary gets deep cold snaps followed by chinook thaws that send meltwater to the gutter line to refreeze overnight. On older eavestroughs, clip-on strings take the brunt of that, and the clips can be hard on aging gutters. Fastened aluminum track with sealed IP68 modules mounts to the fascia or soffit instead, has no loose wire to catch the wind, and carries a 10-year warranty on the lights. Condos and community rules

Lights on your own detached house are generally your call, but townhouse complexes usually have a condo board that controls the exterior, and some titles carry restrictions. Check what applies before booking; a colour-matched track that reads as trim in daylight is usually an easy conversation. See permanent Christmas lights and Calgary HOA rules.

What it costs

Price depends on the linear footage of eave you want lit, the number of gables and peaks, and how the high runs are reached—not on the community name. Published Canadian industry ranges commonly sit around $3,000 to $6,000 for a front-facing install; on many average two-storey Calgary homes the conversation often lands near $4,000 to $5,000. Bungalows and short fronts can come in lower; wide fronts, multi-gable roofs, walkout rear eaves, or full-home coverage run higher. Those are industry ranges for context, not a Luminair quote. Luminair measures your roofline and gives a fixed price. See the Calgary permanent Christmas lights cost guide.

Common questions

Does Luminair install permanent Christmas lights in Brentwood, Varsity, and Dalhousie?

Yes. Brentwood, Varsity, Dalhousie, and nearby established northwest Calgary streets are part of the Calgary-area service area. Request a quote and we will confirm scheduling for your address.

Do permanent lights work on a 1960s or 1970s bungalow?

Yes. Long, low bungalow eaves are some of the easiest to light. We check the fascia at the quote, and soft or damaged sections are best repaired first.

How much do permanent lights cost on a bungalow in northwest Calgary?

It depends on linear footage of eave, gables, and access rather than the neighbourhood. Published industry ranges are roughly $3,000 to $6,000 for a front-facing install, and bungalows with a short front can come in lower. Luminair measures and gives a fixed price.

My house has a carport and no outdoor outlet. Can you still install?

Usually. The controller needs power, so we look at the options at the measure. If a new weatherproof, GFCI-protected outdoor outlet is needed, that is work for a licensed electrician.

Will the track damage my old eavestroughs?

No. The track fastens to the fascia or soffit, not the eavestrough, so there are no clips pulling on aging gutters.
