Permanent Christmas lights in Calgary typically cost a few dollars a month in electricity if you run them every evening, not tens of dollars. The bill is small next to the install. Here is the arithmetic with Alberta residential rate framing—not invented “measured savings” from mythical installs, and not a marketing shrug.

How much power a permanent system uses

Professionally installed permanent LED systems are low-voltage and efficient. Published industry ranges for a typical home put continuous draw roughly in the 50 to 150 watt band depending on linear footage and brightness. That is about the same as one bright household bulb, not a space heater.

A 100-watt system running six hours a night uses about 0.6 kWh per day, or roughly 18 kWh per month. At the low end of the band (around 50 W) you are nearer 9 kWh per month; at the high end (around 150 W) nearer 27 kWh. Those are planning figures from wattage and hours, not meter readings from a specific Calgary house.

What that costs on an Alberta bill

Alberta residential bills separate the energy charge (what your retailer charges per kWh) from delivery, administration, local access, and taxes. Calgary’s default Rate of Last Resort energy charge has recently sat around the low-teens of cents per kWh (on the order of about 12¢/kWh before delivery). Competitive fixed or variable plans can be lower. Delivery and fees push the all-in effective rate higher than the energy line alone.

Using cautious planning bands—roughly 12 to 25 cents per kWh all-in depending on your plan and how you allocate delivery:

  • 18 kWh × $0.15 ≈ $2.70 a month
  • At the high end of draw and rate, you might see something nearer $5 to $8 a month
  • At the low end, often under $2 to $3

Those are planning numbers, not your exact ENMAX (or other retailer) line item. Your bill depends on footage, brightness, schedule, the energy rate in force that month, and delivery. The point holds either way: electricity is not what makes permanent lighting expensive in Calgary. The install is. Compared to what you already spend

A Calgary-area seasonal install in the high hundreds to low thousands per year is tens of dollars a month if you spread it across the year, for about six weeks of use—plus the January ladder risk after chinooks and deep cold. Permanent lighting’s electricity is a few dollars a month for every night you leave it on.

DIY string lights on a big house can also add up if they are older incandescent sets. Modern LEDs are cheap either way. The permanent system’s advantage is not magic efficiency. It is that you are not paying a crew every November while the system still looks finished on a warm-white night in February.

Worry about the quote. The kilowatt-hours are a rounding error.

How to keep the bill tiny

  • Schedule sunset on, midnight off instead of leaving full brightness until dawn—especially useful when Calgary winter nights are long.
  • Use warm white at a modest glow for everyday curb appeal. Full colour at 100% is for holidays, Stampede week, or Canada Day.
  • Zone the front separately from sides you barely see.

How much electricity do permanent Christmas lights use in Calgary?

A typical professionally installed system draws roughly 50 to 150 watts. At six hours a night that is about 0.3 to 0.9 kWh a day, or on the order of a few dollars a month at common Alberta planning rates. Exact cost depends on footage, brightness, schedule, your retailer energy charge, and delivery fees.

Will permanent lights raise my Calgary electricity bill a lot?

No. Relative to the install price and to annual seasonal hanging fees, electricity is small. Think a few dollars a month if you run them every evening, not a second HVAC load.

Is warm white cheaper to run than colour?
