Permanent Christmas lights in the GTA typically cost a few dollars a month in electricity if you run them every evening, not tens of dollars. The bill is small next to the install. Here is the arithmetic with Ontario time-of-use rates, not a marketing shrug.
How much power a permanent system uses
Professionally installed permanent LED systems are low-voltage and efficient. Published industry ranges for a typical home put continuous draw roughly in the 50 to 150 watt band depending on linear footage and brightness. That is about the same as one bright household bulb, not a space heater.
A 100-watt system running six hours a night uses about 0.6 kWh per day, or roughly 18 kWh per month.
What that costs on an Ontario bill
Ontario residential time-of-use prices move, but evening lighting usually sits in mid-peak or on-peak windows depending on the season and your plan. Using a round planning figure of about 10 to 15 cents per kWh all-in for evening use:
- 18 kWh × $0.12 ≈ $2.20 a month
- At the high end of draw and rate, you might see something nearer $5 to $8 a month
- At the low end, under $2
Those are planning numbers, not your exact Hydro One or Toronto Hydro line item. Your bill depends on footage, brightness, schedule, and the rate in force that month. The point holds either way: electricity is not what makes permanent lighting expensive. The install is.
Compared to what you already spend
A GTA seasonal install at $700 to $1,500 a year is $58 to $125 a month if you spread it across the year, for about six weeks of use. Permanent lighting’s electricity is a few dollars a month for every night you leave it on.
DIY string lights on a big house can also add up if they are older incandescent sets. Modern LEDs are cheap either way. The permanent system’s advantage is not magic efficiency. It is that you are not paying a crew every November.
Worry about the quote. The kilowatt-hours are a rounding error.
How to keep the bill tiny
- Schedule sunset on, midnight off instead of leaving full brightness until dawn.
- Use warm white at a modest glow for everyday curb appeal. Full colour at 100% is for holidays.
- Zone the front separately from sides you barely see.

Ask the installer for approximate wattage at the brightness you will use. Multiply watts by hours per night, divide by 1,000 for kWh, then multiply by your evening rate in dollars per kWh. That is your nightly cost.
