The seasonal crew is cheaper this year and more expensive every year after. Permanent lighting costs more once and then nothing. Which is right for you comes down to how long you are staying in the house and how many nights a year you actually want the lights on.
The booking window nobody mentions
GTA installers fill their calendars by mid-October. Demand across Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham and Oakville is crushed into about six weeks, and there is no way to add crews for it.
Miss the window and you have three options: pay a rush premium, take whatever date is left, or do it yourself. Every year. Permanent lighting is scheduled whenever suits you, including a quiet week in June when nobody else wants an installer.
Six weeks versus every night
This is the comparison that changes people's minds, and it is not about Christmas at all.
Seasonal lights are up for roughly six weeks. The other forty-six weeks the house is dark. A permanent system with a dedicated warm-white emitter is architectural lighting the rest of the year — the same fixtures, no colour, washing the roofline and gables on an ordinary Tuesday in June.
Divide the cost by nights used and the arithmetic stops being close. Around $1,100 for roughly 42 nights is about $26 a night. A $4,500 system used most nights over 25 years is a few cents.
Where seasonal installation genuinely wins
Three cases, honestly:
- You are moving within two or three years. You will not reach break-even, and while permanent lighting helps a listing, it does not return its full cost at sale.
- You rent. Permanent track is a fixture. That is a conversation with your landlord, not a purchase decision.
- You want a different look every year. Some people want garland, wreaths and figures, and a roofline system does not replace those.
If you are staying put and what you want is a clean lit roofline, the maths goes the other way quickly.
The ladder
Worth saying plainly. Emergency departments see a spike in ladder falls every December, and a GTA driveway in late November is often wet, sometimes iced, and dark by five o'clock. Two-storey rooflines are the common factor in the serious ones.
Hiring a crew moves that risk to someone insured and equipped. Permanent lighting removes it from the calendar entirely, for you and for them.
