Yes, but the reason has little to do with how cold it gets. Southern Ontario is hard on outdoor hardware because it spends the winter crossing zero rather than sitting below it, and repeated freeze-thaw cycling destroys sealed electronics faster than a stable prairie deep freeze ever will.
Why the GTA is harder on lighting than Winnipeg
Cold on its own is undramatic for an LED. Solid-state lighting is happier cold than hot, and a fixture sitting at minus thirty for weeks is under very little stress.
What actually kills outdoor fixtures is water that changes state. Southern Ontario, moderated by the Great Lakes, oscillates around the freezing point all winter. A GTA soffit can go above zero at midday and well below by evening, over and over, from December to March.
Each cycle does the same thing. Meltwater finds its way into any gap in a housing. It freezes overnight and expands roughly nine percent. That expansion widens the gap. Next thaw, slightly more water gets in. Repeat sixty times a winter and a fixture that was merely water-resistant becomes a fixture full of ice.
What IP68 actually means
Ingress protection ratings have two digits. The first is solids, the second is liquids. The second digit is the one that matters here.
- IP65 — protected against water jets. Fine for rain, not for standing water.
- IP67 — survives temporary immersion, one metre for thirty minutes.
- IP68 — survives continuous immersion beyond one metre. The top of the scale for this kind of hardware.
Every Luminair LED module is sealed to IP68. In practice that means a fixture packed in ice or sitting under a melting snow load is not doing anything it was not built for. On a Southern Ontario roofline, where a January thaw can put standing meltwater along a soffit line for hours, that gap between IP65 and IP68 is the whole ball game.
Ice loading and where the track sits
The second regional problem is ice. Southern Ontario gets freezing rain that the Prairies mostly do not, and the 2013 ice storm is still the reference point for anyone who owns a GTA roof.
This is an argument for permanent track over clipped strings. Clips grip the shingle edge or the eavestrough lip, exactly where ice dams form. Track is fastened to the fascia as a continuous run, and the fixtures sit inside the channel rather than dangling from it. Ice loads onto the roof edge, not onto the lighting.
The takedown you are not doing
Here is the part most durability comparisons miss. Seasonal lights spend most of their life being handled. They get pulled off a frozen roofline in January, coiled while cold and brittle, boxed in an unheated garage, then stretched back out eleven months later.
That handling causes most seasonal light failure, not the weather. A permanent system is installed once and then simply left alone. The single biggest source of damage is removed by never touching it again.
What to check before you buy
- The IP rating on the module, not on the controller or the box. Ask specifically.
- Rated operating range. It should comfortably cover a Southern Ontario winter with margin at both ends.
- Track material. Aluminum does not rot, warp or hold water the way a plastic channel can.
- Warranty length and what it covers. Luminair systems carry a 10-year warranty on track, modules and controller. A one-season warranty tells you what the installer expects.
- Certification. Anything permanently attached to your house and connected to power should carry proper safety certification.
The short version
Southern Ontario does not test outdoor lighting with cold. It tests it with sixty freeze-thaw cycles, freezing rain, and standing meltwater in exactly the place the fixtures live. Sealed properly and mounted in track, permanent lighting handles that. Sealed to a lesser standard and clipped to a gutter, it does not.
