Around the winter solstice, Calgary gets roughly eight hours of daylight: the sun sets around 4:30 p.m. and does not come up until after 8:30 a.m. That is a lot of dark driveway, front step, and side yard. Permanent roofline lights on a schedule turn the whole front of the house on at sunset by themselves—bright, even white from above—and switch to holiday colour when you want it.
This guide is about the everyday, non-Christmas side of a permanent system: using it as scheduled outdoor and security lighting through a Calgary winter. For holidays, game nights, and other colours see year-round colours in Calgary. For the city overview, see permanent Christmas lights in Calgary.
What it is—and what it is not
A professional permanent system is colour-matched aluminum track fastened along the fascia or soffit, with fully sealed IP68 LED modules inside. Besides the colour channels, it has white output you can run bright or dim, warm or cool, on a schedule from the app. Because the light comes from the eave line, it washes down over the driveway, walk, garage door, and entry instead of pointing out at the street.
It is not a camera, an alarm, or a monitored service, and we will not tell you it replaces one. What it does well is the basics people expect from outdoor lighting: the house is lit when it gets dark, whether you are home or away, and the approaches to the doors are not left in shadow.
Where scheduled roofline light helps
- Driveways and garage fronts. Light from above makes it easier to see ice, packed snow, and the edge of the driveway when you get home after dark—most of the evening, from November to February.
- Front entry and house number. Visitors, deliveries, and drivers can find the door and the number without hunting for it.
- Side yards and gates. The gap between houses is often the darkest part of a Calgary lot. A run along the side eave lights the path to the gate and the bins.
- Back lanes and detached garages. In inner-city and established neighbourhoods with lanes, a lit rear eave or garage helps on the walk from the garage to the back door.
- Walkouts and acreages. Larger lots and walkout patios have dark corners that a porch light never reaches. See Rocky View County and Bragg Creek and Priddis for acreage planning.
Schedules that make sense in a Calgary winter
- Sunset to sunrise. Set the scene to follow sunset rather than a fixed clock time and it tracks the season automatically, from 4:30 p.m. in December to well after 9:00 p.m. in June.
- Bright early, dim late. Many owners run brighter white through the evening, then step down to a low warm white after midnight so the house stays lit without lighting up the neighbours’ bedrooms.
- Away from home. Schedules keep running whether you are home or away, so a winter trip does not mean a dark house for two weeks.
- Cool white or warm white. Cool white reads brighter and crisper for the driveway and entry; warm white is softer and suits everyday curb appeal. You can switch between them in the app, or schedule one after the other.
If you want light that reacts to someone walking up, a motion floodlight over the garage or back door works well alongside the roofline. Even, scheduled light from the eave and a motion light over one door do different jobs.
Built for Calgary cold
Security lighting is only useful if it works on the coldest, darkest nights. Calgary eaves swing from deep cold to a chinook thaw and back again, and meltwater refreezes along the gutter line overnight. Fastened aluminum track with sealed modules has no loose wire to fail and nothing for meltwater to pool in, and the system carries a 10-year warranty on the track, LED modules, and controller. More in Calgary winters and chinooks.
What it costs to run every night
LED roofline lighting draws far less than older floodlights. A typical professionally installed system draws roughly 50 to 150 watts with everything on. Running dusk to dawn through December—around 16 hours a night—that works out to roughly 25 to 75 kWh for the month. At an all-in rate of 12 to 25 cents per kWh, that is roughly $3 to $19 for the darkest month of the year, and less with a dimmer late-night scene or a shorter schedule. Those are estimates; your plan and your system’s footage set the real number. The full math is in what permanent Christmas lights cost to run in Calgary.
What it costs to install
It is the same system that handles Christmas, priced by the linear footage of eave you want lit, the number of gables and peaks, and how the high runs are reached. Published Canadian industry ranges commonly sit around $3,000 to $6,000 for a front-facing install; on many average two-storey Calgary homes the conversation often lands near $4,000 to $5,000. Adding side and rear eaves for full-perimeter light runs higher. Those are industry ranges for context, not a Luminair quote. Luminair measures your roofline and gives a fixed price. Common questions
Can permanent roofline lights be used as security lighting in Calgary?
Yes, as scheduled outdoor lighting. The white channels can run bright or dim, warm or cool, from sunset to whatever time you choose, and the light washes down over driveways, entries, and side yards. It is not a camera, alarm, or monitored service, but a consistently lit house on a schedule is a reasonable part of a home-security routine.
Do the lights turn on automatically when it gets dark?
Yes. Schedules can follow sunset instead of a fixed time, so the lights come on earlier in December and later in summer without you changing anything. They keep running whether you are home or away.
Do permanent lights have motion sensors?
Luminair systems are set up around schedules and the app. If you want light that reacts when someone walks up, a motion floodlight over the garage or back door works well alongside the roofline lighting.
How much does it cost to run permanent lights all night in winter?
A typical system draws roughly 50 to 150 watts. Running about 16 hours a night through December uses roughly 25 to 75 kWh, which is roughly $3 to $19 for the month at 12 to 25 cents per kWh all-in. A dimmer late-night scene or a shorter schedule costs less.
Will the lights work at minus 30?
The aluminum track is fastened to the fascia or soffit and the LED modules are sealed to IP68, so deep cold, snow, and chinook meltwater are not a problem the way they are for clipped seasonal strings. The system carries a 10-year warranty on the track, modules, and controller.
How much does a permanent security lighting install cost in Calgary?
It is priced by linear footage of eave, gables, and access. Published industry ranges are roughly $3,000 to $6,000 for a front-facing install, and many average two-storeys land near $4,000 to $5,000. Side and rear eaves for full-perimeter light run higher. Luminair gives a fixed quote after measuring.
